UNEP Admits 1.5°C Is Lost. Colorado Earth-Systems Advisor and Gubernatorial Candidate Says the Real Number the Public Needs to Understand Is Not a Temperature — It Is a Deadline.

DENVER — The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) today released its Limiting Overshoot report, the first major UN assessment to formally concede that the 1.5°C warming ceiling agreed to by 195 nations in Paris in 2015 will be breached within the next few years. The report projects a best-case peak of 1.8°C and, under current policies, approximately 2.6°C by 2100.
Christian Komor, Psy.D., Earth Systems Science Advisor and candidate for Colorado Governor, today released A Comprehensive Review of Double-Verified Contemporary and Paleoclimate Extinction Markers and the Necessary Array of Last-Threshold Interventions — a peer-reviewed scientific paper written as the technical answer to the question the UNEP report leaves open: what actually happens between 1.5 and 1.8, and what does the world have to do about it, starting now.
“Most of the civilian population continues to be soothed into deadly complacency by vague statements from the IPCC and other official bodies featuring figures like 1.8°C and long-range harms described as ‘some damage’ by the end of the century,” Komor said. “To someone who raised their thermostat three degrees last winter to save on the gas bill, 1.5 versus 1.8 sounds like statistical noise — and far less pressing than this month’s food and fuel prices. It is not noise. Every marker of every mass extinction in the last 445 million years of the geological record is presently active in the contemporary Earth system, running one to three orders of magnitude faster than at any point in the paleoclimate record. The window to arrest that causal chain closes in 2035.”
The Komor paper documents six double-verified extinction markers — atmospheric CO₂, mercury enrichment, ocean warming, ocean deoxygenation, ocean acidification, and coral reef collapse — each measured in both the paleoclimate record at the Big Five extinction boundaries and in contemporary Earth-system monitoring. It identifies six interventions the peer-reviewed literature supports as necessary to arrest the causal chain: methane suppression at source, direct atmospheric carbon removal coupled with hyperscale compute waste-heat recovery, ocean alkalinity enhancement, stratospheric aerosol injection, coral assisted evolution with 30×30 marine protected areas, and a geothermal-first, nuclear-second clean-power backbone.
“This is a Colorado issue,” Komor added. “Colorado’s snowpack, water supply, wildfire seasons, agricultural yields, and insurance markets are all inside the causal chain this paper documents. Whoever governs Colorado over the next decade will govern through the window in which the state’s climate future is either stabilized or locked in. The scientific paper is the diagnostic; the campaign is where the policy translation begins.”
