CAMPAIGN SLAMS FOR-PROFIT PRISON GIANT GEO GROUP FOR SUING COLORADO TO DODGE HEALTH & SAFETY INSPECTIONS
“If you have nothing to hide, you don't sue the state to block health inspectors from seeing your kitchen.”

GRAND JUNCTION, CO - Following yesterday’s announcement that multi-billion-dollar private prison contractor GEO Group has filed a federal lawsuit against the State of Colorado to block the enforcement of House Bill 26-1276, the Campaign issued a blistering condemnation of corporate overreach, human rights exploitation, and the systemic corporate welfare pipeline holding up the for-profit detention industry. The GEO Group Lawsuit has raised serious concerns about transparency, public safety, and corporate accountability within Colorado’s private detention system.
HB26-1276, signed into law on June 4, mandates that private, for-profit civil detention facilities, such as GEO Group’s controversial facility in Aurora, abide by basic state safety standards, including transparent health inspections, clean food and water, and adequate medical care. GEO Group’s immediate legal retaliation on June 8 to stop these inspections is a flagrant admission that their business model relies on hiding inhumane conditions from the public eye.
Statement from the Candidate:
“I am completely incensed by this display of corporate arrogance. For-profit prison conglomerates have spent decades treating Colorado as their personal cash cow while hiding behind a veil of secrecy. Let’s be crystal clear: suing the state to block health and safety inspections is an open admission of guilt. It means they know they aren't meeting basic human standards, and they would rather spend millions on high-priced lawyers to fight a transparency law than spend a single cent to fix life-threatening conditions inside their walls.
This isn't justice; it’s corporate welfare at its absolute worst. We are handing billions in taxpayer dollars to a private, $3.3 billion multinational corporation so they can cut corners on food, medical care, and basic human dignity to maximize their executive EBITDA. When I am in office as Colorado Governor, the era of corporate entities overruling Colorado law is over. We will protect human rights, we will enforce total transparency, and we will shut down the pipeline of government handouts to predatory corporate giants. The freedom to profit from the American system must be balanced by the government's power to regulate and humanize that system.”
The GEO Group Lawsuit: Hard Data on For-Profit Failure & Corporate Welfare
The campaign highlights a damning track record of systemic exploitation and immense fiscal cost associated with profit-driven detention:
The Exploitation Model: Just months ago, on February 25, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously ruled against GEO Group in GEO Group, Inc. v. Menocal, forcing the company to face a class-action lawsuit alleging they coerced immigrant detainees in Aurora into unpaid janitorial labor under threat of solitary confinement, while paying others a meager $1 a day to supplement substandard meals.
Taxpayer-Funded Handouts: Roughly half of GEO Group’s massive revenue is directly subsidized by federal taxpayer dollars through Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) contracts. This represents a multi-million-dollar government guarantee where corporate executives internalize the profit and externalize the human and legal liabilities onto local communities.
Cutting Corners for Profit: Because for-profit facilities operate to maximize shareholder value, their primary incentive is to slash operational costs. This has historically resulted in documented medical neglect, severe understaffing, mumps outbreaks, and standard-of-care failures that threaten both the detainees and the local public health infrastructure.
The GEO Group Lawsuit and Shifting the Balance of Power
The Campaign’s platform firmly dictates a 100% Corporate Accountability framework. If an external, multi-billion-dollar entity wishes to operate on Colorado soil, they will submit to the sovereign laws of this state, or they can pack up and leave.
