Climate Change, AI Regulation, and the Fight Nobody's Watching - Conversation with Dr. Christian Komor

In this special episode, we are joined by Dr. Christian Komorr, a clinical psychologist turned Earth System Strategist who is currently running as a 2026 candidate for Governor of Colorado. Dr. Komor is the mastermind behind the Sky Carbon Blueprint, an initiative focused on addressing climate change through large-scale direct air carbon removal.


During our conversation, we discussed climate change, artificial intelligence, government regulation, corporate influence, and the future of humanity.



Why Dr. Christian Komor Is Running for Governor of Colorado


Host: Why are you running for Governor of Colorado? What's the reason behind it, and what are you advocating for in general?


Dr. Christian Komor:


It's kind of a long story.


Ever since I was a boy back in the 1970s, I felt deeply connected to the environment and wanted to help protect it. I even wrote an op-ed back then about the increasing use of concrete, which has been one of the major contributors to climate change.


As climate science became clearer, especially after Dr. James Hansen addressed Congress in the 1980s, I became increasingly concerned.


Today, we're at a crisis point.


There is so much carbon in the atmosphere that we've already triggered environmental feedback loops. We're probably only about seven years away from reaching a point where humanity may no longer have meaningful control over climate change because these feedback mechanisms are accelerating.


These include methane release and the weakening of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which distributes heat around the planet. These systems are becoming disrupted much faster than scientists originally expected.


What I've discovered is that we cannot expect nature alone to repair damage that humans created artificially.


We have to help.


That means taking mechanical action to remove carbon directly from the atmosphere.


Direct air carbon removal is currently the greenhouse gas solution we can realistically pursue.


As Governor, my goal is to establish four direct air carbon removal facilities in Colorado.


From there, we're hoping that Colorado becomes a model for the other members of the U.S. Climate Alliance. If approximately twenty U.S. states adopt similar systems, we believe we can realistically meet climate goals.


Throughout Earth's geological history, whenever atmospheric carbon approached approximately 450 parts per million, it was generally associated with mass extinction events. We are approaching that level now.


That's why we need immediate action.


This challenge is, in my opinion, even more serious than World War II. If we fail, we could lose billions of people and perhaps 70–75% of the species currently living on Earth within this century.


Why Have Governments Failed to Act?

Climate change didn't begin yesterday.


It accelerated after the Industrial Revolution, followed by population growth, globalization, and mass production.


Why have governments, especially the world's most powerful countries, not taken meaningful action despite knowing the risks?


Dr. Christian Komor:


You're absolutely right.


Even the recent UN climate resolution reflects this problem.


Some of the world's largest emitters, including the United States, resisted stronger action, although fortunately many other nations supported the resolution.


The relationship between government and industry is supposed to be balanced.


Industry exists to innovate, develop technology, and generate profits.


Government exists, at least in part, to regulate industry and establish appropriate limits.


When governments fail to provide that balance, industry naturally continues pushing forward because that's what it is designed to do.


Unfortunately, we've had far too little regulation.


Everyone wants economic growth.


Everyone wants profits.


But freedom without responsibility creates imbalance.


That's exactly where we are today.


Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change

We're now living in the age of AI.


During the past five years, we've seen massive AI data centers being built.


Training even relatively small models such as GPT-3 reportedly generated hundreds of metric tons of carbon emissions.


Yet we still struggle to measure the true productivity gains from AI.


Why are we aggressively pursuing technology that appears to increase emissions without clearly measurable benefits?


Dr. Christian Komor:


It does seem contradictory.


History offers similar examples.


Henry Ford chose the internal combustion engine because it was commercially viable despite the existence of electric alternatives.


Again, there was very little regulation.


AI is an extraordinary tool.


It has tremendous potential in medicine and science.


However, I believe it should be highly regulated.


There should be licensing and oversight to ensure it remains balanced.


One aspect of our climate proposal involves co-locating AI data centers with direct air carbon capture facilities.


Carbon capture requires heat.


Data centers generate significant heat.


Instead of allowing that heat to go to waste, we can use it to support carbon removal.


Both facilities also require substantial energy.


Therefore, our proposal includes developing geothermal, solar, and wind power alongside these campuses.


By integrating everything together, we can improve efficiency while helping normalize renewable energy adoption.


Corporate Influence and Government

Many of today's largest technology companies have accumulated enormous wealth and influence.


It has become increasingly difficult for governments to regulate them effectively.


How do you reduce corporate overreach into government?


Dr. Christian Komor:


That's an extremely difficult question.


Speaking specifically about the United States, we've increasingly seen industry gain influence over government.


When government becomes overly aligned with industry, regulation weakens.


Some groups advocate for virtually no regulation at all.


I don't understand that reasoning.


From childhood onward, healthy societies depend upon appropriate boundaries and rules.


Without regulation, society becomes unsafe.


At the state level, all we can realistically do is demonstrate a better model and hope others follow.


Many other countries already regulate climate policy much more effectively than the United States.


AI and Mass Layoffs

AI has also resulted in significant layoffs.


Companies have eliminated hundreds or even thousands of jobs.


If AI is supposed to benefit humanity, how will displaced workers survive?


Dr. Christian Komor:


I don't have a complete answer.


But I do believe this is another example of allowing powerful technology to develop without sufficient regulation.


Even something as simple as borrowing a book from the library requires rules.


Powerful technologies certainly require them.


Without responsible oversight, widespread layoffs become inevitable.


Again, this represents a failure of government rather than industry.


Industry naturally seeks efficiency and profit.


Government exists to protect society.


The Risk of Losing Human Expertise

Some companies replaced thousands of employees with AI only to later reverse those decisions.


In law firms, there's growing belief that AI can replace junior lawyers and paralegals.


But if new professionals never gain experience, who becomes tomorrow's senior lawyers?


Won't this eventually create a massive knowledge vacuum?


Dr. Christian Komor:


I think that's an excellent observation.


Government should represent people, not technology.


When people become secondary to efficiency and profit, we've lost the proper balance.


If elected, one of our priorities will be establishing citizen panels and public deliberation so decisions reflect the interests of ordinary people rather than being imposed from above.


AI in Law, Medicine, and Finance

We've seen lawyers submit AI-generated legal filings containing fabricated case citations.


Medical errors have also been linked to incorrect AI recommendations.


Should highly regulated industries like law, medicine, and finance rely on AI if mistakes directly affect people's lives?


Dr. Christian Komor:


Humans make mistakes as well.


Every surgeon understands this.


When I've had surgery, doctors marked the correct location beforehand because they wanted to avoid operating on the wrong place.


The key question is whether AI's error rate is significantly worse than human performance.


If it is, then the technology needs more development before broader adoption.


Any new technology should perform better than the old one.


Otherwise, there is no meaningful advantage.


Who Should Be Responsible When AI Causes Harm?

When consumers buy defective products, companies can be held responsible.


With AI, however, users often bear the legal consequences while the AI providers face relatively little accountability.


Should responsibility be shared?


Dr. Christian Komor:


At least in the United States, lawsuits often involve everyone connected to a case.


We've already seen significant legal actions involving AI companies.


Beyond that, I wouldn't want to speculate further.


A Final Message About Climate Change


Before concluding the conversation, Dr. Komor shared a story about one of Colorado's native animals.


The pika is a small mountain-dwelling mammal with distinctive round ears.


As temperatures have risen, pika populations have been forced to move higher and higher into the mountains.


Eventually, they reached the mountaintops.


There was nowhere else to go.


Their reproduction rates have reportedly fallen significantly.


For Dr. Komor, the pika represents what climate change looks like in real time.


Species are already being displaced.


Migration, both among wildlife and humans, is increasing.


His closing message was simple:


Climate change is not a future problem.


It is happening now.


Waiting several more years to begin meaningful action may be too late.


While individual choices certainly matter, Dr. Komor believes that one of the most powerful actions citizens can take is to vote for leaders who are willing to aggressively address climate change through policy, regulation, and long-term planning.


Closing Thoughts


This conversation explored the intersection of climate policy, artificial intelligence, regulation, corporate influence, and public responsibility.


Whether discussing carbon removal, AI governance, employment, or environmental conservation, one central theme remained consistent:


Innovation without responsibility creates imbalance.


According to Dr. Christian Komor, meaningful progress requires governments to balance technological advancement with policies that protect both people and the planet.
